Design Contest

Our 2010 BNote design contest closed on November 11, 2010, and we revealed the winner, Richard Winchell, and the winning BNote design at a press event on February 25th. Five random entrants were chosen to win BN22 ($22 worth of BNotes) on launch day! Richard’s art has now been reproduced on the first series of BNotes and he will have a featured spot on our website beginning in May 2011.

Contest details:

Submitted designs should convey at a glance that they are true currency and carry value. One or two prominent Baltimoreans will be featured in a portrait on the front of each note, and a recognizable Baltimore landmark or native plant or animal will be featured on the reverse. Persons pictured on your note must no longer be living. The images on the front and back do not have to be centered and may even be integrated with the rest of the pattern or design. See the page Local Currency Designs for some creative examples, as well as this site.

The motif for the 1 BNote bill is “Be More Free”. Suggested figures: Harriet Tubman, Thomas Garrett, Frederick Douglass, Thurgood Marshall, Cecil Calvert.

The motif for the 5 BNote bill is “Be More Literary”. Suggested figures: Edgar Allan Poe, Zora Neale Hurston, Upton Sinclair, H.L. Mencken, Ogden Nash, Leon Uris.

Entrants may submit designs for either or both denominations.

In addition, each design needs to include the following elements:

  • “BNote” and the motif description, either “Be More Free” or “Be More Literary”
  • the denomination – either BN1 or BN5, using a combined “BN” symbol – prominently displayed, either once on each side or multiple times
  • the BNote “hexagon” symbol – this is completely open to interpretation, though we’re providing one possibility on the Design Elements subpage here.

The dimensions of the BNote are 150mm x 70mm (about 6” x 2.75”). Physical and digital designs should conform to the same relative dimensions, though the original size can be as large as you need it to be. Any digitally-submitted designs should be at least 1800 x 825 pixels.

Email digital designs to design@baltimoregreencurrency.org, along with your name, street address, zip, and phone number, or submit via this webpage.

Deadline for submission of designs is 11/11/2010. All submitted designs may be used for promotional purposes and fundraising related to Baltimore Green Currency Association and the BNote. The final 1-BNote and 5-BNote designs will be created in collaboration with the selected artist, based on the submitted entry. The winner will be announced at a special BNote event. Have fun!
