First Series Designer Richard Winchell
Richard Winchell discovered our design contest through Richard Smith’s Dollar Redesign Project. He had submitted his re-vision of U.S. currency and wanted to take on a project with real-world potential. His design incorporates instantly recognizable Baltimore landmarks and icons into a colorful and highly attractive design. It is a currency evocative of European banknotes, while still retaining a distinctly local feel.
As Richard said in his artist’s statement, “The primary thing I wanted to do with these designs was to make sure they looked like they had real value, reinforcing that they would be legal tender in Baltimore. Another goal was to establish a design system that could be easily expanded to other denominations, with major and minor elements working together. The texts and images on the bills are chosen to add visual interest, as well as intellectual value.”
